Frozen food is taken immediately from the fields to the processing plant and may even contain more nutrients than fresh that’s set on the grocery shelf for a day or two. Look for local produce when its in-season.

If you live in a rural area or have farms in surrounding areas, you are one of those lucky people that can go directly to the source. Those road side fruit and vegetable stands may not be in your area or too far out to be a source of daily food, but you can find the same locally grown produce at grocery stores. It’s fresher and often cheaper because the cost to bring it to market is less. It’s recommended to use organic, but if you choose from the Clean 15, a list that shows fruits and vegetables that aren’t organic but have little or no pesticides shown when tested, you don’t have to purchase their organic counterpart and save money.

Plan meals.

Leftover produce and meat that goes bad is a real hit to your grocery budget. Plan meals ahead so you use all the food that could spoil. If you’re eating stuffed cabbage on Monday, but have a half a cabbage left, include a cole slaw or other dish later in the week. You can also double or triple the recipe and freeze it. It also saves time, besides saving money. Check expiration dates and put that food to use quickly, before it expires.

Use cheaper forms of protein and healthy food.

Just because they’re inexpensive, doesn’t mean they aren’t nutritious. While a lean steak is a good source of protein, so are beans, nuts or eggs. Combining brown rice and dried beans provide all the amino acids for a complete protein supply that you need to bulk up, yet are relatively cheap, especially when purchased in large bags. Consider buying whole chickens and cutting it up yourself to save money on a protein source.

  • Buy your vegetables in bulk when they’re cheapest and freeze them. You’ll freeze in all the nutrients and save money at the same time.
  • Getting large bags of white or sweet potatoes saves money and can provide antioxidants, fiber and healthy carbs, without breaking the budget.
  • Cheaper but healthy foods include rice, beans, low or no sodium canned food—you can also rinse the food several times to remove sodium, eggs, peanut butter or oats. Also, eggs and seasonal vegetables.
  • Planning ahead and cooking your own food, eliminating processed food or eat in/take out, can save a bundle. Real men cook, because they take control of what’s in their diet to get the body they want.
